The human head. A canvas for our thoughts, a window to our soul, and according to a disturbing trend in Mozambique, a potential source of hidden riches. Bald men in the central Zambezia province have become the unwitting targets of a brutal campaign by ritualists, fueled by a bizarre superstition.
These deranged perpetrators believe that the heads of bald men hold a secret stash – a core of pure gold. This ludicrous notion has led to a surge in violent attacks, leaving a trail of fear and devastation in its wake.
“The belief is that the head of a bald man contains gold,” says Afonso Dias, a police commander in the region. This twisted logic, completely devoid of any scientific backing, has driven these individuals to commit heinous crimes.
The victims, targeted solely for their lack of hair, are often ambushed, murdered, and mutilated. Organs are removed, and in some cases, the heads themselves are severed, all in a grotesque pursuit of a non-existent fortune.
The impact on the community is profound. Bald men, once a diverse demographic, now walk in constant fear. The social fabric is ripped apart as suspicion and paranoia take root.
This isn’t the first time such barbaric practices have plagued the region. Albino people have also been targeted in the past, their body parts sought after for similar, unfounded rituals.
The authorities are scrambling to contain the situation. Arrests have been made, but the root of the problem – the warped belief system – needs to be addressed. Education campaigns are crucial to dispel these dangerous myths and foster a sense of safety and security.
The targeting of bald men is not just an attack on individuals; it’s an assault on logic and reason. We must stand together, condemn these acts of violence, and work towards a future where fear doesn’t dictate our lives, and where the human head is valued for what it truly is – the seat of our humanity.
